Chapter 9: Lake Water Quality

9.6 Aquatic Vegetation

Aquatic plants, also called hydrophytic plants or hydrophytes, are plants that have adapted to living in or on aquatic environments. Because living on or under the water surface requires numerous special adaptations, aquatic plants can only grow in water or permanently saturated soil. Aquatic plants act as a habitat to fish.

Two aquatic plant surveys were conducted for each of the 4 Pelican group of lakes. The surveys took place in 2003 by Blue Water Science. A variety of native vegetation was found, along with one exotic species curlyleaf pondweed. See appendix F for aquatic plant survey data.

See appendix G for MN DNR estimated aquatic herbicide and algaecide costs. The MN DNR should always be contacted before herbicides or algaecides are applied in reference to permits and directions.
