3.4 Past Projects Major projects taken up by the PGOLID include the following:
Lake Management Plan The Pelican Lake management plan includes the septic system evaluation and watershed and shoreline inventory reports. PGOLID requested these reports be done so that data could be collected and analyzed and the board could better understand how to preserve environmental quality. As part of the requirements from the lake management plan recommendations were made to the board for protecting the lake environment. These recommendations included:
As a result a lake coordinator position was recommended to oversee the projects and continued monitoring. Mosquito Control Mosquito control has been conducted by Professional Mosquito Control. This effort has significantly reduced the number of mosquitoes around the lake making the outdoors much more enjoyable. Lake and Stream Monitoring Lake and stream monitoring has been conducted by RMB Environmental Laboratories since 2001. The monitoring is essential to diagnosing water quality in the area. Lakes Coordinator Position The Lakes Coordinator Position was approved by PGOLID in 2004 to oversee and interpret monitoring as well as initiate and over see projects set forth by PGOLID. Since then the position has expanded to include many other responsibilities that concern the Pelican group of Lakes and watersheds. Curly Leaf Pondweed Evaluation and Treatment A curly leaf (CLP) evaluation was requested with the intent of evaluating the nuisance of the exotic aquatic plant and potential control options. In 2005 the Minnesota Shoreline Restoration company identified 25.5 acres of CLP in 4 different areas. The largest area located near Strom's Bridge. On May 26 th 2006 over 29 acres of Big and Little Pelican Lake were treated. It is recommended, and likely, that treatment will continue in an effort to keep Curly-leaf pondweed at a manageable level. |
